Bloomberg Asharq

Bloomberg, the global financial information and news leader, and the Middle East’s biggest publishing group,
Saudi Research and Marketing Group (SRMG) is ready to launch the latest addition to the Arabic broadcast media landscape: Asharq.
The new 24/7 multiplatform channel will provide a premium financial news service in the arabic language.

Myreze was given the incredible opportunity to create the branding package for Asharq with the goal of creating a unique and dynamic look and feeling for Asahrq and its new shows.
A huge project for a small company in Bergen, but as always, we were prepared to take the task head on.

Keeping Things Clear.

The main visual language of the brand is based on movement to put emphasis on the energy and trust of the new channel. The movement is represented by round, versatile shapes to create a clean, modern and dynamic feeling with three main elements used by our team in the creative process: Circles - the core shape that lies at the heart of all our our designs for Asharq, Morse Code - for its ability to turn text into a dynamic design language and waveforms - for the way they convey energy and information into a visual graph.

These simple elements and shapes inspired us to think differently and served as our team’s baseline inspiration for the entire branding package and it all started by studying Asharq’s original logo. The dots in the logo and went on to become a common thread through all of our concept designs.

"When we announced Asharq’s launch three years ago, we understood that its branding and studio needed to be a reflection of its values: Quality and consistency. With Myreze’s unique vision and attention to detail, we were able to deliver an incredible result that not only gives our viewers the best access to the relevant information they need, but provides them with a powerful visual experience that makes sense."

Our Visual Blueprint

Those dots reminded us of the morse code system. From there, we built a cohesive visual language for the entire design package that fully incorporates our circular concept and is integrated into all their new logo designs, the visual language for their openers and ident, and even their new virtual studio environment as well.

Frequencies and Waveforms

Information is a complex matter. It can manifest into a million different ways, with many different ideologies within it. So how does it affect us? Its sole existence depends on movement, and gains its power and validation through people, shaping us all on a daily basis without us even thinking about. We are made of the information we receive.

Typography.

The font family used is Neue Haas Bloomberg, Blomberg’s signature font. It comes in a wide variety of weights to allow for greater flexibility across applications. The bold, crisp font is modern and maintains readability even when used as an on-screen logo.

Like light, shapes also have a spectrum from one shape to another. By really applying the "Spectrum" concept, we communicate consistency and clearity.

Bloomberg Asharq – Openers

Apart from the main news, Asharq’s visual studio has also been designed to accommodate 2 of their new shows in spectacular fashion: What Happened, their info-packed, fast paced news show and Colours of the East, a vibrant and energetic general update on cultural topics from hard news to light stories. The fully-virtual space is split up into various parts that are perfectly suited for the shows and allows the host to interact with visual elements and complete freedom and flexibility when presenting segments that take full advantage of AR.

News.

Information is fragmented

A bird's eye view of a city reveals the chaotic nature of life that we’ve all come to adapt and get used to. When viewing civilization from above, it becomes clear that it's almost a miracle that anything functions at all. It's organized chaos.

We began our concept of the Asharq news opener by envisioning those people in their cars, jetting about, as informational fragments, rushing to get to the next destination to further share that information. It's disjointed, it's all over the place. But what if those fragments of information went in the right direction? A direction that leads towards you, the viewer. That’s exactly where Asharq’s values come in.

Asharq does not operate as a filter. It operates as a GPS, leading you away from unnecessary noise - Much like the GPS’s inside the cars in chaotic cities. Except those GPS’ are running on a map that the rest of the world uses, and they are used to being distracted. Asharq wants to change this.

As the main news opener, our morse code concept played a large part in the inspiration behind the design and the meaning of it.

Colors Of The East.

The opener we animated for Asharq’s new show: Colours of the East needed to reflect the show’s light-hearted mood and vibrant energy and this was done through an exceptional display of bright colours and dynamic movements.

The opener shows the conception of the studio islands and begins in a similar fashion to Asharq’s news opener with a globe shooting through the sky towards the horizon, the horizon this time however, being the ocean's surface. Upon impact, a huge shockwave sends tides of scattered particles across the surface that combine to create the structure of Asharq’s island studio in a spectacular display of colour.

The view then turns to the interior of the virtual studio, showing off intense details reflecting off the floor before giving a near 180° turn of the set before shooting towards the center of the room and zooming out to reveal the lively Colours of the East logo.

What Happened.

The show What Happened is all about time. It's about giving you what you need to know as efficiently as possible. We decided to show this effectiveness through the use of our strongest concept: Morse Code.

The opener starts above the circular center of the What Happened studio as its outer layer unfolds and disperses morse codes into the air, representing information being released into the world in an unorganized manner.

These morse codes then circulate around the interior of the set signifying the process of Asharq collecting this information and organizing it into an efficient way for the viewers.

The camera then shifts to the exterior of the set, gliding along the ocean's surface and revealing the morse codes being sent out into circulation after being categorized in the studio, before zooming upwards and showing the greater picture of the information being dispersed back into the world. After a moment to collect the beautiful birds-eye view of the island formations and the newly dispersed information that circulates around them, the What Happened logo elegantly blurs into vision.

A unique visual story of information being collected, organized and dispersed. The perfect introduction for the What Happened program.

Bloomberg Asharq – Idents

We also created a fun and dynamic set of 3 news idents..

Patterns
The first Ident was internally named Patterns, due to the “mix n’ match” design of the elements used and a play on the logo concept touched on earlier: Circles. It starts with one of these circles rolling along and bumping into another part of Asharq’s logo before all separated parts seem to be magnetically activated, and join together by floating slowly falling into place for a satisfying finish. The result is a clean and memorable image for Asharq.

Blocks
The second ident is one we named “Blocks” for the blocky nature of the wall that Asharq’s logo is sitting within. It is also the ident that takes most inspiration from our morse code design concept, evidently shown in streams of them flowing into a surface completely made of white blocks, almost as if to collect all the information and sealing it within its logo, ready for the viewers to see.

Morse
The third and final news ident is a simple one, but one that is beautiful as well as bearing obvious inspiration from our morse code design concept as well. It features a collection of “Morse Tubes” that swing up and down, thus revealing Asharq’s translucent logo that hides in clear view.

Bloomberg Asharq – Studio

The Studio’s design was created to organically bridge the gap between the audience and what is shown on screen. The concept was inspired by the idea of having the universe of Al-Arabiya visible through the windows of the studio, with the studio being in the center to give the audience a great view into the various opening titles of the shows, and the feeling of being at the center of the information.  The studio utilizes clear glass and quartz material, and in doing so we created a connected identity that is consistent both conceptually and practically.
